Autogramm “Music That Humans Can Play”

Autogramm “Music That Humans Can Play”

We loved the previous releases by Autogramm (see our reviews here and here) so were delighted to have this new release drop in our inbox. We love our power pop and the fact that the last release offered something unique made it a bit special.

Listening to opening track “Born Losers” it strangely feels like meeting up with an old friend. We are immediately enamoured with the return of their synth driven power pop sound. Tracks like “Hey Alfie” and “Yesterday” have a charming melody which makes them instantly appealing. Those tracks feel like they were made to feature on a James Gunn soundtrack (we know that he loves his power pop, especially when it has a hint of glam about it).

As a genre power pop often falls into the trap of being a bit samey. Autogramm successfully steer that obstacle, firstly by the emphasis on synths and by also throwing something else in to the mix. That’s apparent on “WannaBe” (sadly not a Spice Girls cover…but oh boy would we like to hear that!) which adds an almost sci fi electro pop feel in to the mix. There’s a similar darker feel to “Why Do We Dance”. That song along with “Plastic Punx” actually has us recalling the fabulous Pink Grease (a band that should have been huge!) or perhaps even  the more Devo esque sound of White Witches.

Although we shouldn’t underestimate the bands ability to just knock out some brilliant power pop. Tracks like “Love Is For Fools”  and “Dive Right In” are the kind of joyous pop songs that we really wish would get played on the radio and make Autogramm stars.

This is another class release by the band and the kind of album you end up recommending to all your friends. There aren’t many bands who are delivering this kind of sound (and certainly not as good as Autogramm). What we really need is a scene to develop around the band so they get the exposure they deserve. But until the rest of the world wakes up to them this is another chance to get ahead of the crowd and enjoy the sound of a great band.
