The Uppers “Manic Melodies”

The Uppers “Manic Melodies”

The press release for this EP immediately ticked a lot of boxes for us when it described The Uppers sound as combining raw punk with the melody of their ’77 and power pop influences. That description coupled with the fact that their name reminded us of the immense uppers and dowers release from The Yo Yos meant we had to check out the EP.

It has to be said that opening track “Stimulation” does indeed follow the lead of the Yo Yos by being a fast and furious punk rock song but importantly having a strong melody. It’s a template the band follow across the EP. Our last few reviews have been of some great power pop releases so it’s nice to hear a bit more of a dirty rock n roll sound. That’s certainly what you get with songs like “Madam Please” and “Don’t Start”. There’s a sleazy, good time feel to these tracks. It’s a relatively straight forward punk n roll sound but it’s damn good!

Anyone who enjoys punk with melody is bound to lap up “Slide”. The EP as a whole will appeal to rock n rollers who have enjoyed bands like D’Generation, The Wildhearts and The Exploding Hearts. Sometimes you just need to listen to some great rock n roll and The Uppers certainly deliver that. We can’t wait to hear more of their stuff and we bet they’re a riot live so hope we get to see them in action soon.
