Beat City Tubeworks “Top Rock”

Beat City Tubeworks “Top Rock”

We don’t know what they put in the water in Scandinavia but somehow it seems to produce more than it’s fair share of brilliant sleazy rock bands (Hanoi Rocks, Backyard Babies, Hellacopters etc etc). One of the latest is Beat City Tubeworks who promise “70’s influenced rock n roll/garage rock in its true form and glory”

If we’re honest the band have already summed up this release with its title, “Top Rock”. Opening song “Roadrunner” is a refreshingly straight forward classic rock song. Along with tracks like “Archaic Approach” many of the songs on this release take us back to the days where rock music was all about just playing it fast and hard. There’s also a timely reminder with “Ivory Wave” that it’s all just based on a sped up version of simple rock n roll anyhow.

The band do take us on a few diversions along rock history on this release. There’s an almost seventies/Thin Lizzy feel to “Fading To Grey”. Whilst, adding a cow bell to “Estranged” instantly adds a bit of glam rock into the equation. Something that’s continued with the good time rock of “Take Two Of These And Call Me”.  There’s also a reminder of other brilliant Scandinavian rock bands such as The Hellacopters and Hardcore Superstar, on the more sleaze driven sound of songs like “Succubus” and ”The Jokes On You”.

Given all that’s going on in the world right now, it’s great to have a straight up hard rock album. There’s no attempt to pander to whatever may be ‘in vogue’ in the music world. There’s just a sense of a ‘proper’ band playing the music they love. It’s music to have a beer with and just forget all your troubles…..and we’ll certainly raise a glass to that!
