Steve Conte “The Concrete Jangle”

Steve Conte “The Concrete Jangle”

We have no fear in declaring our love for the work and ability of Steve Conte. Let’s face it, any musician who has been asked to join the New York Dolls and Michael Monroe’s band is clearly a great artist. Similarly whenever he releases material in his own name you know it’s going to be good.

Opening song “Fourth of July” sets the tone for the album as it’s a step away from the sleezier rock of Michael Monroe but is instead a corking power pop gem. To be fair, that’s the same for tracks like “All Tied Up” and “Girl With No Name”. These are really high quality pop songs that are built around super strong melodies. They’re the kind of classic power pop numbers which you would expect to be huge worldwide hits in a just world. There’s a distinct Beatles feel but with a bit of extra punch (ie it’s Cheap Trick esque!). Given that mix, it’s no surprise to learn that Steve has been writing with the legendary Andy Partridge of XTC fame.  One of our favourite tracks is “Decomposing A Song” which had us ruefully recalling Enuff Z’Nuff at their best.

It might not be sleazy but there’s definitely a bit of glam thrown into the mix with songs like “We Like It”. But the influence is more 70’s glam a la T Rex, Bowie and Sweet. But fans of Steve’s more rocking bands will still find plenty of love in songs like “Shoot Out The Stars” and “Motor City Love Machine”. The only disappointing thing about this album is that it ends far too early with the dreamy melody of the appropriately titled “I Dream Her”.

We shouldn’t be surprised that this is a great album as Steve Conte is such a talented artist. But even so, the fact that he seems to be able to effortlessly turn his hand to such a variety of musical styles is just so impressive. If you’re a fan of any of the acts he has been involved in then we are sure you will love this. Even if you’re not aware of his previous work, but love quality music infused with melody and style, this is an essential purchase.
