The Evening Sons “Tracks”

The Evening Sons “Tracks”

We’re always in two minds when a press release references bands we like. On the one hand, we think great this should be good. But it also raises high expectations. Given The Evening Sons press release mentions some of our favourite ever bands (The Replacements and The Lemonheads) it’s fair to say the pressure on them is high!

Thankfully any fears are put to bed immediately with opening track “Morning Serenade”, it’s like a Lemonheads song with a bit of added Husker Du or Replacements grit (mind you isn’t that just early Lemonheads anyway!). Together with tracks like “This Time” and “Cindy’s Sox” these songs manage to take that brilliant alternative rock sound and deliver them with a new lease of life.

Things get even better with “Superspreader” which adds a bit more power pop into the mix. Other than perhaps The Love Breakers and The Speedways we’re struggling to think of any other UK bands that have been capable of delivering the kind of power pop with a kick sound like you get with “Summer Rain” and “Let Her Run”. In fact “I Gotta Gurl” is probably one of the best Cheap Trick esque song we’ve heard played by a British band.

But the great songs just keep coming and coming. We love the almost bubble-gum throwaway rock of “Glenn Frey” it’s the kind of track you can imagine The Replacements would have thrown on an album just to P””” off their hardcore fans. That track bumps up against the pure and beautiful pop of “Forcefield”. The album then ends all too soon with the exuberant catchy pop rock of “Hey Hey (Let’s Get Lost)”.

This is definitely one of those times where all the references to our favourite bands is totally justified. In fact right from the first listen we kind of knew that The Evening Sons are destined to become a new favourite band. It’s just a delight to discover a band that is releasing such a strong debut, an album that is full of great songs and a sense of personality (something quite rare these days). Definitely one of the best albums we have heard for years and just so exciting that it’s a UK band which means there’s a chance we actually might get to see them live!
