Canned Pineapple “Big Break”

We have no idea where Canned Pineapple got their name from or if there is any particular rationale behind it. But it’s certainly one that caught our attention and isn’t easy to forget. That’s probably also a fair reflection on how we feel about this new EP from the band.
It opens with the brilliant “Jessie Met Jane” which is a catchy song that feels equal parts Brit pop and Power Pop. The whole EP feels like a bit of a throwback to the days when music just seemed a hell of a lot more fun. Tracks like “My Only Favourite Girl” and “Ain’t It Strange” have the scuzzy throwaway indie rock sound of bands like The Libertines. They’re indie rockers but with huge pop hooks that really draw you in.
But you also get a song like “Georgia” which is a bit slower but really emphasises the importance of melody to the band. Similarly “Blue” feels like a classic indie song designed to get the crowd singing and swaying. We’re huge fans of both Presley and Costello but it is no surprise that it’s Costello that the band reference in their song “Elvis”. Like him, the band have a knack for delivering great indie pop songs. It actually has us recalling the Supernaturals, a band that briefly flirted with the big time with some charting singles.
There’s certainly plenty to suggest that this EP could well be the ‘big break’ for Canned Pineapple. Anyone who enjoys perfectly crafted, brit pop flavoured indie rockers would be well advised to give this a spin. With a UK tour on the horizon this is your chance to support a band who seem intent of bringing a sense of fun and excitement back into the UK music scene.
